(One reason) Why we do what we do

Filed under: news — Christian @ 11:36 am

When I tell people the elevator pitch for RevenueLoan’s business plan – Loans from $100-$500k, with no collateral or dilution of ownership – it takes people a moment to process the sentence, then their eyes widen, they look at me like I am crazy, and then ask if they have misunderstood something.

For decades businesspeople have been trained that loans are secured by either an equal (or greater!) amount of physical items (machinery, real estate, inventory, etc), or by handing over a portion of the company to the investor (the Angels and VC model). Any other loan model is simply incomprehensible to people nowadays.

I don’t want to go all “It’s A Wonderful Life” on you here, and talk about some sort of idealized bank manager in the 1950’s loaning Bob the Grocer money to expand his store, and “just knowing” that Bob is good for the money… but…

Steve Blank is one of Those Guys that had his fingers in everything important for a couple of decades. He has perspective with a capital “P”. And his blog is full of really fascinating, in-depth reading. His posts are dense with ideas – it may take you more than one reading to grok them fully – and his thoughts will often tick along in the back of your head for a long time after you read them.

On Thanksgiving he wrote a thoughtful love letter to entrepreneurs called “When It’s Darkest, Men See the Stars”. In it he speaks of “the democratization of entrepreneurship” – how the barriers to starting a company have dropped to the lowest level in decades, and how we have just barely scratched the surface of the possibilities this will create in the coming decade.

So why does RevenueLoan do what we do? Is it some sort of altruistic George Bailey belief in the good of the common man? Well, while you could call it that, I think we are rooted in a worldview that is in harmony with Steve Blank’s vision of the coming decade: A coming explosion of entrepreneurial opportunity the likes of which has never been seen before. And we want to help these small businesspeople be more successful in riding the crest of this entrepreneurial tide. (And make money while doing it, of course!)

So take some time to read Steve’s article. It is refreshing, well written, and well thought out. And it shows us the stars in the night sky…
